PRIDE skills, Praise, Reflect, Imitate, Describe and Enthusiasm, are powerful interaction strategies commonly used in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT). While simple in practice, PRIDE skills have a meaningful and lasting impact on children’s emotional, behavioral, and social development. PRIDE skills guide caregivers to focus on positive, child-led interactions. During play or everyday moments, adults intentionally follow the child’s lead, notice what the child is doing well and respond with warmth and interest. This creates an environment where children feel safe, valued, and understood.

When caregivers follow their child’s lead, reflect their words and show genuine enthusiasm, children experience their caregiver as emotionally available and responsive. This secure connection forms the foundation for improved behavior and emotional regulation. When caregivers consistently use PRIDE skills, children receive more positive attention for appropriate behaviors, leading to fewer behavioral challenges over time. PRIDE skills also support emotional regulation, build confidence through specific praise and enhance language and social development.
PRIDE skills shift the focus from correcting behavior to strengthening relationships. By emphasizing connection, consistency and positive attention, caregivers create an emotionally safe environment where children are more likely to listen, learn, and grow. PRIDE skills create small changes in how adults interact with children, and their impact is significant. When used consistently, these skills help children feel secure, confident, and supported—laying the groundwork for healthy behavior and strong relationships that last well beyond childhood.
