Dr. Janaya Howell is a certified school psychologist who supports children, adolescents, and their families through compassionate, evidence-based care. She specializes in helping young people navigate challenges related to anxiety, trauma, behavioral concerns, and developmental needs.
With a strong foundation in child development and psychological assessment, Dr. Howell creates a safe, nurturing space where children feel empowered to explore their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. Her therapeutic approach blends proven interventions with a client-centered philosophy, promoting healing, resilience, and the development of healthy coping skills. She also conducts comprehensive psychoeducational evaluations and provides individualized school-based recommendations to support academic and emotional success.
Having worked extensively within the school setting, Dr. Howell brings insight into educational systems and is particularly skilled at advocating for school-based services. She collaborates closely with families, educators, and related service providers to ensure that children receive the care and accommodations they need to thrive.
In addition to her work with children and adolescents, Dr. Howell is passionate about supporting caregivers and has specialized training in perinatal and postpartum mental health. She works with individuals navigating the emotional complexities of pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood—including perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, birth trauma, identity shifts, and the challenges of bonding and adjustment. Dr. Howell provides a warm, nonjudgmental space for caregivers to feel heard, supported, and empowered as they care for themselves and their families.
Dr. Howell is committed to fostering an affirming and inclusive environment for individuals of all backgrounds, identities, and lived experiences. She values each client’s unique perspective and strengths, and approaches every therapeutic relationship with empathy, cultural humility, and respect. Her work is grounded in strong collaboration with families, schools, and multidisciplinary teams to provide holistic, individualized care.
She earned both her Master’s and Doctorate in School Psychology from Adelphi University. Outside of her professional work, Dr. Howell enjoys spending quality time with her husband and three young children, as well as reading and swimming
