Dr. Katherine (Kate) Gibson has dedicated her career to helping children and families by providing evidence-based treatments, and training and supervising clinicians in the provision of evidence-based treatments. Dr. Gibson is a licensed clinical psychologist who is board certified in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology and certified as a National Register Health Service Psychologist.
Dr. Gibson specializes in the treatment of anxiety, Selective Mutism, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors (BFRBs), Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome & Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections (PANS/PANDAS), trauma and behavioral problems. All of her work incorporates parents into the treatment process.
Dr. Gibson is certified by PCIT International as a PCIT Therapist and Within Agency Trainer and is in training toward certification as a Regional Trainer. Dr. Gibson is first author of “Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) Adapted for Older Children: A Research Development Manual.” Dr. Gibson is certified by Kurtz psychology Consulting as a PCIT for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM) therapist and Within Agency Trainer. Dr. Gibson is also a certified Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) therapist. Dr. Gibson has completed advanced training in the treatment of OCD and PANS/PANDAS using Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) through the International OCD Foundation Pediatric Behavior Therapy Training Institute. Dr. Gibson has presented at regional and national conferences on the topics of trauma, PCIT, and evidence-based treatments. Dr. Gibson has done research in the areas of trauma program evaluation, and trauma resulting from intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and child sexual abuse.
Dr. Gibson obtained her B.S. in Psychology from Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Dr. Gibson obtained her M.A. in Forensic Psychology from John Jay College of Criminal Justice in New York City. Dr. Gibson earned her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology in 2008 from the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP) at Alliant International University in San Diego. She received pre-doctoral trauma specialty training at the Chadwick Center for Children and Families in San Diego. She completed her APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship at Astor Services for Children and Families in the Bronx providing psychological testing and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), including several evidence-based treatments, in outpatient and day treatment settings. Dr. Gibson went on to complete her post-doctoral training at Astor and was then promoted to Clinical Supervisor of Astor’s Highbridge outpatient clinic. As Clinical Supervisor Dr. Gibson provided individual and group supervision, as well as clinical training for staff on the implementation of a wide variety of evidence-based treatments.
Dr. Gibson co-founded a private practice on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in 2010 with a mission of providing research supported treatment to children, teens and their families with a focus on anxiety, attachment, trauma, and behavioral challenges. Dr. Gibson left that practice when she relocated to Sarasota, Florida in 2014 where she began a private practice with the same mission. Dr. Gibson continues to run her Florida group practice. Dr. Gibson was the Director of Training at Kurtz psychology Consulting PC form 2019-2022.
Dr. Gibson is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA), the Society of Clinical and Adolescent Psychology (APA Division 53), APA Division of Trauma Psychology (APA Division 56), the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies (ABCT), the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA), the Florida Psychological Association (FPA), the International OCD Foundation (IOCDF), and the Selective Mutism Association (SMA). Dr. Gibson is currently licensed in Florida, Maryland, New Jersey, New York and Virginia.
In her free time she enjoys cooking, exercising, doing things outdoors, and spending time with her family and friends including 4 furry family members.
